Keyboard Sizes Explained: Full, TKL, 75%, 65%, 60%
Keyboards come in several sizes, each trading keys for desk space. Picking the right size is about what you actually use, not what sounds impressive.
The main sizes
- Full-size: number pad included, widest, best for data entry
- Tenkeyless (TKL): no number pad, saves space
- 75%: no number pad, compact arrow keys and function row
- 65%: no function row, arrow keys kept
- 60%: no arrows or function row, most compact
Why smaller can be better
A smaller keyboard frees desk space and puts the mouse closer to your body, which is better for your shoulder. Unless you enter numbers all day, you probably won't miss the number pad.
How to choose
- Type numbers constantly: full-size
- Want a balance of keys and space: TKL or 75%
- Prioritize desk space and mouse room: 65% or 60%
For most people, a TKL or 75% board is the sweet spot. You keep the keys you use and gain real desk space without relearning shortcuts.
