How to Make Your Headphones Last Longer

Most headphones die from the same few causes: cable strain, moisture, and dead batteries. A few habits keep them working for years instead of months.

Treat the cable gently

The cable fails first, usually at the connector. Avoid yanking the plug out by the wire, and unplug by gripping the connector itself. When storing wired headphones, coil the cable loosely rather than wrapping it tight, which stresses the internal wires.

Store them properly

  • Use a case or pouch rather than tossing them in a bag
  • Keep them away from heat, like a car dashboard in summer
  • Don't leave them in humid bathrooms

Protect the battery (wireless)

Lithium batteries last longest when kept between 20% and 80% charge. Avoid leaving wireless headphones at 100% on a charger overnight every night, and avoid letting them drain to zero regularly. Both shorten the battery's usable life.

Clean them monthly and replace worn ear tips, which are cheap and keep the sound and fit good. The habits are boring, but they're the difference between a pair that lasts a year and one that lasts five.
